The concept of cover supervisor jobs is fairly new in the field of education so a lot of people are not yet familiar with regards to how it works and who are qualified to fill the jobs. In the simplest of terms, being a cover supervisor is basically a form of substitute teaching. However, unlike a substitute teacher, a cover supervisor is widely considered to be part of the non-teaching staff so he or she is only there to supervise the class. In a nutshell, you are in the classroom to make sure that the class is in order and that the students are doing whatever tasks they were assigned or required to finish. For a further understanding of the concept, below are four things you should know about it.
1) You don’t teach the students, you simply supervise them. The main reason why schools hire cover supervisors is to free up time for their teaching staff so that they can spend more time on planning and preparing lessons, resources, and new policies for their students. The concept has seen wide and popular use in the United Kingdom in recent years. In fact, almost all secondary schools in the country engage cover supervisors in one way or another.
2) Your main duty is to manage the behavior of the students and make sure that they accomplish the work assigned to them by their teacher. With that said, you will always be notified firsthand when you are going to cover a class. You are expected to oversee what the students in the classroom are doing and ensure that all of these are done in accordance with school policies. It will also be your responsibility to answer queries from the students with regards with regards to processes and procedures. It’s therefore very important that you familiarize yourself with the school before you work in it as a cover supervisor.
3) It’s your responsibility to collect any completed work by the students during your supervision. You will then have to turn over the work to the class teacher. As was mentioned earlier, you are not on the teaching staff so it’s not your job to teach the kids what’s right or what’s wrong when it comes to the tasks assigned by their teacher. You are not supposed to check or mark the completed work as well. these are the responsibilities of the teacher. Just collect the papers as is then turn them over to the teacher.
4) There are no standards when it comes to what qualifies a person to become a cover supervisor. The requirements vary from school to school. It’s completely up to the employer what qualifications they are going to look for in applicants. Some employers require applicants to be graduates of certain courses while some accept mere high school graduates. However, a very common requirement is that the applicant should have at least some experience working in a classroom or among students.
In conclusion, cover supervisor jobs can be rewarding if you put your efforts into them.
